JANUARY - EPISODE I: WINTER 2019

WISDOM OF THE SAGES
EPISODE I: WINTER 2019
Hello People of the World;

Here we are in the new year and as I write this, in the middle of a “polar vortex”. It got to -18 degrees below yesterday and it is supposed to warm up to 20 above. I hope you are all keeping warm out there. Nothing snide to say about the weather this month, as you can see, it can still kick our ass on occasion.

 All right, let’s get going:

1:[ It struck me the other day why there is so much air in a potato chip bag – you know how we all endlessly fucking complain that we are being cheated because the amounts of air whenever we open a bag of chip to stuff into our big, stupid face.

First, the amount of chips in a bag is measure by WEIGHT not size. Secondly – I think I remember seeing this on an episode of “How It’s Made” – they put air in it to cushion the chips during shipping. Have you ever ridden in the trailer of a semi-truck? Yeah, the air in the bags makes sure that you have a lot of unbroken chips to stuff our big, stupid faces with when we open them.

Sure, there are some broken chips in there when we do open them – which does nothing to prevent us from still stuffing them into our big, stupid face by the way – but it would be a bag of crumbs by the time the bag of chips gets to the store shelves. That is why there is so much air inside a bag of chips….

2:[ I have a slew of movie to review. I have fallen behind in my Ticket Stub photos and review. Here is a list of all the films I saw since listing the review of the new season of “Doctor Who” in November:
“Creed II”
Bohemian Rhapsody”
“Widows”
“Mary Queen of Scots”
“Wings of Desire”

Then, this month, I had to catch up on some I missed:
“Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse”
“If Beale Street Could Talk”
“Glass”
“Citizen Kane”

I will be posting new images and review as soon as possible…

3:[ Next month, I will be returning to the University of Wisconsin Parkside to teach the “Native Americans in Media” course. I have been doing this off and on for many years. They have a cyclical way of determining when the course returns – every two years. The last time I taught this course was 2017. Before that was 2014 during the fall semester. It shifted to the spring semester in 2017, which is why looks like there was a three-year gap.

I do enjoy teaching the course. It honed my philosophy of Native media and art and helps me organize my thoughts about them.

4:[ So, I have been getting caught up on books these past few months. I forget what a joy it is to read. I bought some James Baldwin for the first time, since seeing “If Beale Street Could Talk.” I read a galley print of “African Samurai” about Yasuke, an African Samurai who served Oda Nobunaga. So, I am always trying to read things from a perspective not my own, if only to build my lacking empathy.

5:[ WE have been caught up in the freeze his past week here in the Midwest. The further north you are, the colder it is. But of course, Chicago has to try to make itself the center of everything. It was -26 in Minneapolis according to my Char, but here we are in the Windy City comparing our fricking temps to Mars. Seriously? Mars? Come on. We’re not special, it’s fucking cold everywhere dudes.

6:[ I will be posting my annual BEST OF 2018 very soon. I know but I had to also catch up on some movies I missed out on. Stay tuned for that.

That is it for this month.

My apologies for not posting completed writings last year. As you can see it hs extended to this year as well. With the move and all the jobs I rarely have time to sit down and plot out any of the month’s editions. But I will get to finishing them once I have a consistent time-off schedule. I know you all waited with baited breath to read my ramblings on the news of the day. Also, worry not, I will be re-posting for August, September, October, and November, once I have those writings completed.

As always, I invite you to comment, correct, or contradict anything I write here. I am open to a critical debate. Thanks for taking the time to check out what I write here and I will see you in a month.

Happy New Year. Again.

Until next time, remember “I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control everything really are.”
