NOVEMBER - EPISODE XI: FALL 2020

WISDOM OF THE SAGES

EPISODE XI: FALL 2020

Hello People of the World;

Well, here we are again, at the end of the so-called “Native American Heritage Month”. Oh well. It always seems like Native American Month ends when Thanksgiving is done. Plus, I see all the Native people meme-ing landback and nothanks and dayofmourning all the while Instagramming their turkeys and pies. Yeesh.

As always: Stay safe. Stay home.

All right, let’s get going:

1:[ This virus really showed how equal we all really are: How much do we all need medical assistance? Really. Everyone needs it yet it is being held back. Medicine should never cross paths with consumerism. I mean, why does it cost so much to get healthcare? Especially during a pandemic. Sheesh.

2:[ Remember that Threesome Priest – Smokescreen to hide all the child molestation for no matter how “kinky” a three-way appears, for Christian people trying to cover up a pedophile ring, hetero kinks are a great distraction. Let the guy alone and keep calling out those priests that harm children…

3:[ My Next “Hot Take” (as the kids say): Not as big a fan of “The Never-Ending Story”as everyone else in the world seems to be right now. I guess this whole appeal to 80’s nostalgia proves to me a creative bankruptcy that has nearly infect all ongoing series and mediums. I lived through the 80’s and they all get it absolutely wrong. Once you see how wrong they get it, you cannot un-see it.

4:[ Let me be honest for a moment: I really didn’t care for “Blood Quantum”. Sorry. I found nothing cool or great about it. I really did not like any of the main characters. Lysol was as stupid villain. Having a bunch of unlikeable characters doesn’t make your movie edgy. Save that Zack Snyder shit for the DC movies. I mean, the characterizations aren’t even original. Ooh, mean Indian men. When has the never been seen before? Why do all Native women have to be mothers or pregnant. Is that all they’re good for? Pretty disappointed. Especially since “Rhymes for Young Ghouls” was so good. But stretching to grubby, angry Indian aesthetic is pretty one-note. Plus, zombies are such a stupid monster… which why I am hypocritically writing my own urban Native zombie script….

5:[ Marvel Comics recently release the first issue of their Marvel Voies line with Indigenous Voices #1 which features Native American writers and artists tackling Marvel’s in-canon Native American characters. I love this but I do worry that this is a one-off. I mean, they did release it during November, “Native American Heritage Month” and the month of Thanksgiving. Sheesh. The “#1” implies there will be more than one “Indigenous Voices”. However, it could just mean the first issue of the Marvel Voices line. I hope to see more. Hell, even I have a pitch for a Marvel X-Man. Hit me up Marvel. Prove me wrong!

6:[ I am putting my first novel on sale on SmashWords. “A Rez Tale”. I started this novel back in 2004 after finishing my first novel manuscript “Once Upon a Time on the Rez” in 2003. After looking at the Native media landscape did not see a story like this out there, so I took some inspirations of mine and plotted out the story, even witing out part of the ending. But as family needs and employment changed, I found myself starting and stopping many long-form writings, “A Rez Tale” being one of them. Then, the quarantine happened.

I am an introvert by nature and found myself in an ideal creative space, the space I wanted for some time to be honest. That given the time to work on the things I wanted, I would get them done. However, this was not conducive to filmmaking. Don’t be fooled, those making films now, will pay for in the coming months. And those huge studio films shooting right now, can afford to.

I got a video review of the movie “Wind River” produced and is getting some good traction. Heck, I am even making a short zombie movie with my family using Zoom. But in the time given me, I was able to finish a 7,000-word start and write into a 96,000-word novel. After getting friends to edit it and give feedback, I decided to self-publish it as an e-book. Of course, this is no big deal. Indians want paperbacks and such. More real.

The work I put into this was no less real than a paperback edition. Besides, I won the rights and can send it to a publisher. Which is what I am doing too. If a publisher does not accept it, then it is still out in the world as an e-book. Cool, eh? So, if you are interested, I am doing a reading on Dec. 5th, when it goes on sale. You can get tickets BY CLICKING HERE.

I hope since you support my writing here, you can join me there. The event is free and no obligation to buy the e-book.

7:[ We cannot go back to “Normal” all after this: Because all of this, ALL OF IT, was SO DAMN EASILY PREVENTABLE!

That is it for this month.

This year felt like it dragged on but it also went by very quick. One more month until 2021 and we get more of the same. Especially if your BIPOC. Because remember, in November, we didn’t kill democracy, we only trained ourselves to shoot it in the leg. (You know the year is bad when I’M making political hack commentary!)

Anyways, wow, it looks like I had a lot to write about this month. Be well folks. Masking up will bring an end to this sooner than later. Thank you.

As always, I invite you to comment, correct, or contradict anything I write here. I am open to a critical debate. Thanks for taking the time to check out what I write here and I will see you in a month.

Until next time, remember “I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control everything really are.”
